Soft Play & Wooden Furniture: Planning a Children's Activity Space
Soft play and wooden furniture can serve different activities within a children's space. Plan around the exact equipment, age range and supervision needs rather than choosing a room from a photograph. This is Part 2 of our children's-space planning series.
Define the activity areas
Consider where children will read, make things, play actively and store materials. Check how people move between those areas. A modular arrangement still needs the manufacturer's placement and clearance instructions.
Check soft-play specifications
Compare the item's dimensions, intended use, age and weight guidance, assembly and care instructions. A soft outer surface does not make every arrangement suitable for climbing, sliding or unsupervised use. Follow the product-specific requirements.
Choose wooden furniture by function
For a table, chair, rocker or storage unit, check the actual size and purpose. Confirm stability, fixings and any anchoring requirements. The material or a Montessori-style description alone does not establish suitability for every child or setting.
Plan for care and inspection
- Keep assembly and use instructions available.
- Check the required cleaning method for each surface.
- Inspect components and fixings as directed.
- Remove damaged items from use pending assessment.
- Keep supervision and age restrictions clear to the people responsible.
Make the room practical
Leave appropriate access for adults and cleaning. Check whether the equipment can be stored or moved as intended; do not assume it can be folded, stacked or reconfigured without instructions.
